Just in time for the long weekend! I received this lovely letter from Patricia A. O’Brien recently and I was so inspired by what I saw.
Patricia sent photos of her completed Flower Sampler from my RES book and this is what she wrote:
“My name is Patricia A. O’Brien and I live in McHenry, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, USA. For years, as a single mom, I did not have time to devote to my stitching. But, since retirement, I have taken it up, and I love hearing from everyone in the community about their projects.
In 2009, my daughter bought me the “Ribbon Embroidery and Stumpwork”book by Di van Niekerk.
My daughter added the following note on the first page: “I hope you have a lot of time to explore your passion! Maybe you will have some extra time to work more on your hobbies. I know you have never done ribbon embroidery, but I thought the flowers and pictures were so pretty that you would like to learn. You are so gifted with your thread and needle Mom!”
Recently, I had to have lung surgery, and that left me with a lot of time in recuperation mode due to a longer-than-expected recovery. So, I used that time to create this garden portrait using the “Ribbon Embroidery and Stumpwork” book by Di van Niekerk.
It is a great book with very detailed instructions.
It was my first attempt at ribbon embroidery. At first, I thought it would be too much of a challenge, but it turned out to be so much fun learning ribbon embroidery. The sunlight on the beautiful silk ribbons reminded me of my perennial garden. It was such an inspiration for recuperation.
It provided me with many happy, healing hours of stitching and combines my two loves – gardening and creating new and beautiful things.
I had the picture framed by a professional framer and I attach photos for you.
Thank you, Di for all the people you have helped throughout the years. “
Here is Patricia’s gorgeous piece, don’t you just love it!

This best-selling project is available at a special price and it’s ideal for anyone wanting to learn from scratch. This book will teach you all the secrets about how to embroider with silk ribbon, step-by-step and how to make three-dimensional leaves and flowers using stumpwork techniques.
You will find more details here.
Please note: This is a large kit and you will have lots of ribbon and threads left over to use in future projects. To get an idea of what the kit costs in US$, divide the total by 15. Our currency is very favourable to anyone living outside South Africa!
Please, feel free to contact us with any questions.
Thank you, Patricia, for sharing your work with all of us! Have a lovely weekend for all of those celebrating Labor Day!
